Leadbeater’s Possum, a tiny nocturnal possum living in the Central Highlands forests of Victoria, is Victoria’s endangered faunal emblem. Their population was heavily hit by the recent Victorian bushfires. Approximately 50% of their population was lost, leaving just around 1,000 individuals left. Much of their remaining habitat is being further hit by increased timber extraction and ’salvage’ logging.
Friends of Leadbeater’s Possum are working to replace habitat values, including tree planting and installing nest boxes in areas where tree hollows have become scarce, to ensure they continue to survive in the wild.
